The San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta wrapped up today in Los Angeles, marking the conclusion of a five-week training and competition block for the Australian Sailing Team National Squads on the LA 2028 Olympic waters.  This included three separate Sailing Grand Slam events, giving athletes across all ten Olympic classes valuable racing time where they will compete in 2028.

The road to LA 2028 continues this week, with Australian crews set to line up at the San Pedro Olympic Classes Regatta. The event marks an important opportunity for Australia’s 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 squads to gain valuable racing experience on the waters that will host the Olympic sailing competition in 2028.

The Australian Sailing Team has delivered a strong performance at French Olympic Week, finishing with two gold medals, a silver medal, and a strong spread of top-10 results across the Olympic fleet. Matt Wearn added a second gold to Australia’s tally, joining Grae Morris, who claimed gold in the iQFOiL. Laura Harding and Annie Wilmot also stood on the podium, securing silver in the 49erFX, their first medal as a pairing.

Grae Morris found redemption on the Mediterranean Sea, winning gold in a stunning final series that kept him waiting and fighting until the very end. After dominating the past two years at this event but falling short in the finals, Morris’ campaign looked under threat early. But the Olympic silver medallist responded in style, delivering the race win that mattered most to clutch a remarkable victory.

Double Olympic Champion Matt Wearn has made a commanding return to international racing, taking out the ILCA 7 title at the Trofeo Princesa Sofía, the opening Sailing Grand Slam of the season.

Australia’s next generation of sailing talent is making waves on the world stage, with Grae Morris and Rory Meehan both named as finalists for the Kuehne+Nagel Young World Sailor of the Year Award – Male.
