Australian Sailing Team seeks future 49erFX Stars

Published Thu 25 Jun 2026

The Australian Sailing Team is inviting female sailors to take the next step in their Olympic journey, with Expressions of Interest now open for an FX Experience Camp designed to identify and develop future talent for the Brisbane 2032 Olympic Games and beyond.

The initiative is aimed at sailors currently competing in classes such as the 29er, Nacra 15, ILCA and other youth classes who may be considering a transition into the 49erFX during 2027 or 2028 as part of a long-term Olympic campaign into Brisbane 2032.

Held at Lake Macquarie 6th - 9th of October immediately following the NSW Youth Championships, the four-day camp will provide selected sailors with the chance to experience one of the world's premier Olympic skiff classes in a high-performance environment.

Australian Sailing will provide the boats, while coaching and mentoring will be delivered by Australian Sailing Team National Coach Jim Colley, Australian Sailing Futures Coach Brady Lowe, and athletes from the Australian Sailing Team and NSW Institute of Sport.

The camp is designed to give sailors valuable insight into what an FX campaign looks like, while helping them understand the skills, athletic attributes, values and mindset required to pursue an Olympic pathway.

"The 49erFX is a dynamic, fast-paced class that rewards teamwork and athleticism," said Colley. "This camp is about giving sailors a chance to step into the boat, challenge themselves and start exploring what an Olympic campaign could look like. It also allows them to have early exposure into our High-Performance environment, and an opportunity to learn valuable lessons from our current athletes.

We're looking for sailors who are curious, committed and excited by the prospect of taking the next step in their sailing journey."

Australian Sailing High Performance Director Iain Brambell said the Brisbane 2032 cycle presents a unique opportunity for the next generation of Australian sailors.

"With a home Olympic Games on the horizon, we are well underway building the athletes and teams who could one day be on that start line," said Brambell.

"We appreciate that future medal contenders will travel a multitude of pathways to the podium. This camp is part of a broader effort to ensure talented young sailors can explore the opportunities available to them, while helping the high performance program’s coaching team to identify and engage with athletes who have the potential to succeed at the highest level.”

Participation numbers will be limited, with invitations offered based on responses received through the Expression of Interest process. Sailors who are not selected for this camp will still be added to Australian Sailing's talent identification database to ensure they are aware of and considered for future development opportunities.

Submit your Expression of Interest here by Friday 10th of July
