It was the day of reckoning in Athens at the 2019 Open Finn European Championship, with two European titles to decide and two places at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games up for grabs.
On the penultimate day of the 2019 Open Finn European Championships, Athens once again presented itself with some challenging conditions and with no more races sailed due to very light wind all day.
Another testing day on Weymouth’s Portland Harbour when 14 plus knot shifty winds were dished up on Day 5 of the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships at Weymouth, a day that the Australian Sailing Squad’s Will and Sam Phillips made a comeback to hold eighth place in the 49er Gold fleet.
The racing schedule at the Finn Open Europeans in Athens is back on track with three more races completed on Thursday May 16 and one day remaining for Australia’s Jake Lilley to make the medal race cut.Â
Diverse conditions on Day 4 of the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships played havoc with the Australian Sailing Team and others in Weymouth, changing up scores across the board that only the chosen few escaped to stay on top.
The third day of the 2019 Finn Open Europeans (Wednesday May 15) delivered two more races of the series and a mixed bag of results for Australia’s Jake Lilley and Jock Calvert.
They got off to a shaky start in the first two races at the 49erFX Europeans in Weymouth two days ago, but the Australian Sailing Squad’s Natasha Bryant and Annie Wilmot have been upwardly mobile since, moving up to 12th place on Day 3.
Conditions on day two, Tuesday May 15, of the 2019 Finn Open Europeans delivered the opening three races of the series contested by 84 sailors from 33 nations, including Australia.

After a tough few months, Australia’s Mat Belcher and Will Ryan worked their way back the more familiar top of the podium in Sanremo, Italy, at the 470 Open European Championship.
Day 1 of the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships at Weymouth in the UK, and the Australian Sailing Team (AST) enjoyed conditions they are more at home in, with a 15 knot onshore breeze and lumpy seas on the menu at the home of the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition.
Crews spent day five (May 13) at Sanremo, Italy, ashore as the 470 Open European Championship race committee monitored the strong winds, up over the 40 knot mark at times, eventually flying the AP flag just before 1800hrs.
Among the Australian 470 teams in Sanremo, Italy, Mat Belcher, Will Ryan, Nia Jerwood and Monique de Vries handled the extreme conditions best on day four (May 12) of the 470 Europeans.
A second in Saturday’s only race to complete the qualification round means Mat Belcher and Will Ryan hold onto their solid margin in the overall Open standings, which includes non-European teams, at the 470 Europeans at San Remo, Italy.
The gulf of Sanremo lived up to its fame on day one (May 9) of the 470 Europeans, delivering perfect conditions and a perfect scorecard to Mat Belcher and Will Ryan who posted three bullets and stormed into first on the men’s leaderboard.
From 13-19 May, members of the Australian Sailing Team (AST) will compete at the 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 European Championships at Weymouth, home of the London 2012 Olympic Sailing Competition.
