Silver for Wearn at Laser Standard Worlds

Matt Wearn has won a Silver Medal at the 2020 Laser Men’s Standard World Championships at Sandringham Yacht Club today. This is the Tokyo-bound athlete’s third World Championship silver, to go with the results collected in Aarhus in 2018 and Sakaiminiati in 2019. The final day of racing proved tough for the Australian Sailing Team and Squad athletes, with three races in an Easterly 18 to 22 knots.

Wearn in podium position after penultimate day of Laser Worlds

Matt Wearn has moved into third place after a grueling day on the water at the 2020 Laser Men’s Standard World Championships at Sandringham Yacht Club. Three races were sailed today in 20 to 25 knots from the South West after racing was abandoned yesterday due to storms.

Racing was abandoned on day four of the 2020 ILCA Laser Standard Men’s World Championship due to scattered lightning and squalls of up to 38 knots. Racing was initially postponed due to lack of wind, but failed to increase enough before the strong winds set in.

Day Three of the 2020 49er, 49erFX and Nacra 17 World Championships saw the 49ers hit the water early for the morning shift at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club on Corio Bay. They completed the last three races of their truncated qualification series to have six races with one drop included.

Shifting winds caused delays on Day Two of the 49er and Nacra 17 World Championships at the Royal Geelong Yacht Club, with the morning shift becoming the afternoon, and then the afternoon becoming the evening. Further headaches were caused with yesterday’s strong Easterlies dumping large amounts of weed across the racecourse on Corio Bay.

For when too much is more than enough. Yesterday certainly offered heaps. This morning was plenty, and by this afternoon, it was still too much. An extra hour’s wait ashore seemed more than prudent, and the additional one after that was also wise.

Time to pull the trigger - 2020 49er and Nacra 17 World Championships

Quite possibly no other Australian Sailing Squad crew embody this saying more than Tess Lloyd and Jaime Ryan aboard their 49erFX. A relatively new pairing at barely 18 months, long time skiff sailor Lloyd and ex-470 crew Ryan have combined well, both collectively as a crew and on the scoreboard during their somewhat short tenure.

Our Australian Sailing Team Men’s 470 crew of Mat Belcher and Will Ryan have finished the Hempel World Cup Series in Miami in third place. The reigning World Champions placed fourth in the double points medal race, and this was enough to secure them a place on the dais.

The dreaded light and variable held sway once again for the penultimate day of racing in the 2020 Hempel World Cup Series Miami. It might not be the best way to get fair racing completed, but as Will Ryan, the For’ard Hand of our Men’s 470 said, “It is what we came here for, so we’re glad to have had the opportunity practice in these sorts of conditions.”

They are our ‘Dynamic Duo’ in the Men’s 470, Mat Belcher and Will Ryan, and today a win and third place has launched them from fourth place overall to out in front by two points at the Hempel World Cup Series event in Miami.
